Sound analysis blog tasks

Starting from 4:00 this clip uses a variety of diegetic and non-diegetic sound.

For example the diegetic sound examples are the dialogue that is being used to show when Gwen and her dad are speaking and he’s telling her to stop running away. Sound effects such as the gun shots and Gwen Stacy’s recurring thoughts are represented as diegetic sound.

However a non- diegetic sound in this clip is the music at the background as the characters cannot hear it and has been added post production to make it seem sad when Gwen is talking about her life.

Sound: parallel and contrapuntal video

In this video, I have decided to create a “before and after the war” in Africa specifically in Somalia and decided to use happy music to create enigma. For example the first part is parallel as the happy pictures match the music then I use contrasting images such as after the war to juxtapose the happy music.

Lighting analysis blog tasks

Low-key lighting, particularly side key lighting, is used in this image. It is positioned such that half of her face is hidden in darkness while the other half is highlighted. As a result, there is a sense of mystery because only half of her face is obscured by smoke and darkness.

Low-key lighting has been used in this image. Only the woman's face and hand are in focus due to the top lighting technique used. Due to the low lighting, the subject's fixed gaze on the small light, this image creates an enigma code.

The lighting in this image is high key. Shadows at his eyes, behind his nose, and on his neck are visible because to the usage of top key lighting. As a result, this image is seen as being more serious. The way the light is shown on him further emphasises the possibility that he is the primary character.

Low-key lighting has been used in this image. Half of the character's face can be seen more clearly than the other because to the employment of top key lighting that is placed more to the right. Due to the fact that the majority of the image is darker than the guy himself, the lighting used helps create action and enigma codes. Additionally, his revolver may still be seen despite the darkness.

Under lighting in particular is used in this image's high-key lighting. The fact that the shadow cast is larger than the woman's body suggests that she is being pursued. Additionally, all of her facial characteristics are visible due to the illumination, indicating that she is afraid.

This picture uses low-key lighting. Back lighting is used in this picture, but in a way that the lighting is very subtle, and smooth which goes with the romantic feeling being shown by the two people.

The low-key lighting in this picture was achieved using back-lighting, as can be seen by the shadows cast by the figures. The characters can't be seen because of the darkness, which creates an enigma code.

The woman's shadow is lower than her actual height, demonstrating the low-key lighting provided by the tilted down top illumination in this image. The lighting on the wall, face, and shoulder is likewise quite harsh and dazzling, producing an enigma code.

This picture uses high-key lighting created using top lighting. The lighting here is possibly used to replace them because the character is sort of praying and looking almost directly at the key light.

Backlighting, which is used to generate the low-key lighting in this photograph. The knife in his hand might be utilised as both an action code and an enigma code because we can hardly make out the character, which heightens their mystique.

This picture uses high-key lighting. The bright lighting helps us as viewers identify the man as the main character. This is also reinforced by the fact that the man is holding the gun.

Film noir

Film noir in French means “dark film” style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of fatalism and menace. The term was originally applied (by a group of French critics) to American thriller or detective films made in the period 1944–54 and to the work of directors such as Orson Welles.

Cynical heroes, stark lighting effects, frequent use of flashbacks, intricate plots, and an underlying existentialist philosophy..

This is a Gangster territory as Tony works to control the city by getting ride of competing gangs and gaining physical control of the city, and he likewise gains control of the movie screen in his rise to power.

Mise-en-scene video recreation and learner response

 1) Mr Bush’s feedback:

I had reviewed both positive and negative feedback which is helpful for my future projects. I had included a shot list as requested however like you said it would be better if i had added the time of the clip shots which i will do next time. The original soundtrack was used in the scenes that it was meant for and the setting was accurate as the location was a school and we had filmed it in a hallway with lockers. Although the performers had attempted to stick to the original the clothing of the principle was not accurate. Finally the export quality needed a higher resolution.

2) Feedback from peers:

WWW:

accurate with original clip x4

setting is accurate (location)x 8

Audio match x 4

Camera angle was well x4

EBI

quality x5

camera angle x3

Costume x3

Lighting

3) Self assessment:

I believe that if i put more effort in i would’ve been able to achieve all the things i had to do. What went well was the audio and the acting, me and Bushra tried our best to find people that would be suitable for the scene. However the costume was not accurate for some people e.g the clothing of the principle was not appropriate. Another thing I could’ve improved was the quality of the video in general as it was in poor quality.

4)  Planning a script had helped those in the video learn their lines much easier instead of them having to watch the scene several times. The shot list also allowed everything to be organised.

5) In my opinion, the feedback was very informative and will further help me improve my future videos. The quality in this video was not the best as we recorded it on a phone and to prevent this happening again later on I will use another device that will produce higher resolution videos. Also instead of leaving my videos to a later time I will start on them earlier ; this will allow me choose the best device to work on as well as allowing me to prepare props and clothing. Being organised and punctual  will be my main goal as that will be the solution to a well produced video.

6) I have learned that although any parts of Mise - en - scene nah seem insignificant it is very important and any lack of effort will show in your work. My mistakes have aided me into understanding what is expected of me next time and I now know the importance of lighting, setting, clothing, etc.
